AFTERSHOCK

Aftershock is a 2010 Chinese disaster|drama film directed by Xiaogang Feng, and starring Daoming Chen, Chen Li and Yi Lu. The film depicts the aftermath of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake which is believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20th century by death toll, approximately 240,000 people died. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Tangshan in Hebei, People's Republic of China, an industrial city with approximately one million inhabitants.

Da Qiang, his wife Yuan Ni and their twin children Fang Da and Fang Deng live a happy life in their native Tangshan. But on July 27, 1976, a devastating earthquake destroys the city. Da Qiang dies while trying to rescue their children from their apartment. Later, as the building collapses, Fang Da and Fang Deng get trapped among the debris. Their mother, Yuan Ni, is forced to decide whether her son or daughter should be saved. She reluctantly chooses Fang Da. Incapable of moving, her daughter Fang Deng overhears her mother's difficult decision, but miraculously survives. She is then adopted by Mr. Wang, a soldier, and his wife. Thirty-two years later, after another earthquake in mainland China, Wang Deng, now a married woman, travels to China and voluntarily joins the rescue team. There, she meets Fang Da and she leans the drama of her mother and brother all those years.
