THE LONER
The Loner (a.k.a. Hikikomori) is a 2008 South Korean horror film directed by Park Jae-sik and starring Ko Eun-ah, Jeong Yoo-seok, Chae Min-seo, Lee Da-in, and Jeong Yeong-sook.
This film highlights a very controversial condition suffered by many teenagers and young adults in several countries including South Korea and Japan, in which someone decides to confine themselves to solitude locked in inside their bedroom or house. Soo-na, a 17 year old high school student who seems to have it all, belongs to a wealthy family and lives in a huge mansion with her uncle and grandmother after her parents apparent death in a car accident. Soo-na is driven to madness and over the edge of sanity after the suicide of her best friend who was constantly bullied in school. Right after her friends burial ceremony, Soo-na decides to lock herself in her room, and soon after she starts talking to someone that nobody else can see. Every time someone tries to approach her, she tries to kill herself in front of her family. Worried about her niece's condition, Soo-na's uncle, Se-jin, enlists the help of his girlfriend, Yoon-mi, who happens to be a very skilled psychiatrist and who specializes in Hikikomori. After some analysis of the case, Yoon-mi begins to suspect that Soo-na's condition has something to do with some hidden family history and her uncle needs to help her before it is too late to save her.
